The heavy snow, along with bitterly cold temperatures, sleet, and ice, created treacherous travel conditions, toppled power lines, and caused widespread school closures, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/power-outages-roadways-snarled-ice-dangerous-weather-winter-storm\/\">news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the afternoon of January 26, the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/our-satellites\/currently-flying\/joint-polar-satellite-system\/visible-infrared-imaging-radiometer-suite-viirs\">VIIRS<\/a>\u00a0(Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/suomi-npp\/\">Suomi NPP<\/a>\u00a0satellite observed new snow covering a large swath of the country. The left image is natural color, while the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/how-to-interpret-a-false-color-satellite-image\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">false-color<\/a> image on the right uses a combination of visible and infrared light (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/data\/instruments\/viirs\/spectral-bands\">bands M11-I2-I1<\/a>) to distinguish snow (blue) from clouds (white).<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nohrsc.noaa.gov\/snowfall_v2\/\">National Weather Service data<\/a> indicate snow accumulations of up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) in parts of Oklahoma between the mornings of January 23 and January 26, with higher accumulation across the Midwest and in New England. Totals of around <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/discussions\/nfdscc3.html\">20 inches<\/a> were reported in several Northeast states.<\/p>\n<p>Some locations were digging out from record daily accumulations, including <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stlpr.org\/government-politics-issues\/2026-01-25\/dangerous-cold-temperatures-st-louis-snow\">5.1 inches<\/a> in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 24, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtae.com\/article\/pittsburgh-state-of-emergency-snowstorm\/70140587\">11.2 inches<\/a> in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 25. Several inches of snow and sleet also fell in parts of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/north-texas-snowfall-ice-reports\/\">North Texas<\/a>, a rare occurrence for the area. With temperatures remaining below freezing in many places, the snow and ice may stick around.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/appliedsciences.nasa.gov\/what-we-do\/disasters\/disasters-response-coordination-system\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disasters Response Coordination System<\/a> has been activated to support federal partners responding to the winter storm.
