Overview <\/h3>\n

In response to a request from the 53rd Session of the Codex Committee on\u00a0Food Hygiene (CCFH), the Joint FAO\/WHO Expert Meeting on Microbiological\u00a0Risk Assessment (JEMRA) convened a meeting to review recent scientific\u00a0developments, data, and evidence associated with foodborne viruses,\u00a0specifically for prevention and intervention measures and the efficacy of\u00a0interventions in the food systems continuum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since that initial expert meeting report from 2008, awareness of the public\u00a0health importance of these foodborne virus-commodity combinations has\u00a0increased, resulting in additions or changes to some food supply chain\u00a0management strategies and research initiatives. Prevention remains the\u00a0cornerstone of control of foodborne viruses. This is because these viruses are\u00a0environmentally persistent and resistant to many treatments commonly used\u00a0to inactivate foodborne pathogens. Effective inactivation methods continue to\u00a0be needed and are continuously being evaluated.<\/p>\n

Based on the above situation, the Expert Committee: 1) reviewed the relevant\u00a0scientific literature; 2) deliberated on the developments that have occurred in\u00a0control of foodborne viruses in the relevant food supply chains since the 2008\u00a0JEMRA report; and 3) identified the most promising approaches to further\u00a0protect the food supply chain from virus contamination.<\/p>\n
