Overview <\/h3>\n

Preventive chemotherapy (PC) is defined as the large\u0002scale distribution of safe, quality-assured medicines,
\neither alone or in combination, at regular intervals, to
\nentire population groups through community- and
\nschool-based interventions. WHO recommends PC
\nagainst 5 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs): lymphatic
\nfilariasis (LF), onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis,
\nsoil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) and trachoma,
\nwhich are the subject of this report. PC is also used
\nagainst other NTDs, including foodborne trematodi\u0002ases, taeniasis and yaws, for which the PC approach is
\ncurrently applied on a much smaller scale; reported
\ndata are still fragmented and are not included in this
\nreport. Other interventions (individual disease manage\u0002ment, vector control, veterinary public health and water,
\nsanitation and hygiene) may also be required for the
\ncontrol, elimination and eradication of these NTDs.
\nWHO Member States submit reports relevant to the
\ndiseases targeted with PC using PC Joint Application
\nPackage which helps to facilitate the process of appli\u0002cation for medicines, review and reporting on interven\u0002tions, as well as to improve coordination and integra\u0002tion among different programmes.<\/p>\n
