{"id":8286,"date":"2026-02-11T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/godshand.link\/ground_post\/summer-heat-hits-southeastern-australia\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T05:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T05:00:00","slug":"summer-heat-hits-southeastern-australia","status":"publish","type":"ground_post","link":"https:\/\/godshand.link\/en_gb\/ground_post\/summer-heat-hits-southeastern-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Heat Hits Southeastern Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p>While a part of the United States braved <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/extreme-january-cold\/\">extreme winter cold<\/a>, January 2026 brought sweltering summer conditions to many parts of Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s area-averaged mean temperature was 1.90 degrees Celsius (3.42 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 1961\u20131990 average, making it the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/current\/month\/aus\/summary.shtml#:~:text=1961%E2%80%931990%20average%2C%20the-,fourth%2Dwarmest,-January%20on%20record%20for\">fourth-warmest January<\/a> since the start of observations in 1910, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). Contributing to this was a late-month heatwave in the country\u2019s southeast that was especially intense between January 26 and January 30. During that period, numerous weather stations in South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria recorded record-high daily temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>The heatwave\u2019s intensity and extent are evident in this map, which shows air temperatures at 03:00 Universal Time (2 p.m. local time in Victoria) on January 29, modeled at 2 meters (6.5 feet) above the ground. It was produced with a version of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/44246\/geos-5-a-high-resolution-global-atmospheric-model\">GEOS<\/a>\u00a0(Goddard Earth Observing System) model, which integrates meteorological observations with mathematical equations that represent physical processes in the atmosphere. The darkest reds are where the model indicates temperatures reaching or exceeding 45\u00b0C (113\u00b0F).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to BoM, the hottest temperatures of January 2026 were measured in two places in South Australia: in the town of Andamooka on the 29th and at the Port Augusta airport on the 30th, where temperatures reached 50.0\u00b0C (122.0\u00b0F). In both New South Wales and Victoria, the month\u2019s hottest day was on the 27th, when temperatures reached 49.7\u00b0C (121.5\u00b0F) at a station in Pooncarie and 48.9\u00b0C (120.0\u00b0F) at stations in Walpeup and Hopetoun.<\/p>\n<p>The heatwave brought significant human and public-health effects, including the increased risk of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-09\/heat-illness-emergency-presentations-surge-heatwave\/106213074\">heat-related illness<\/a>. Organizers of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, Victoria, suspended play on some courts and closed roofs to provide shade as part of an \u201cextreme heat policy\u201d to protect players and spectators, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/tennis\/australian-open-braces-soaring-temperatures-melbourne-2026-01-27\/\">news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The recent warmth followed another bout of heat earlier in the month that, combined with strong winds and dry conditions, created dangerous fire conditions. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-16\/victoria-bushfires-weather-satellite-capture-images-of-blazes\/106225070\">Numerous<\/a> bushfires were burning across Victoria <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/4amEXkn\">on January 9<\/a> as officials <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/emergency.vic.gov.au\/news-and-media\/bushfires-could-spread-in-catastrophic-conditions-update-9-january-2026\">urged people to evacuate<\/a>.
