Volcanic activity ramped up in December 2025, marking the latest in a series of periodic eruptions that began in 2022. The eruption was ongoing as of mid-February 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Satellites are critical to monitoring volcanoes such as Home Reef in remote and difficult-to-access locations. These images, from December 3, 2025 (left), December 27, 2025 (center), and January 28, 2026 (right), captured some of the volcano\u2019s growth during its recent spate of activity. They were acquired with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat\/oli\/\">OLI<\/a>\u00a0(Operational Land Imager) on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-8\/\">Landsat 8<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\">9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thermal data from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/about\/\">MODIS<\/a>\u00a0(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/our-satellites\/currently-flying\/joint-polar-satellite-system\/visible-infrared-imaging-radiometer-suite-viirs\">VIIRS<\/a>\u00a0(Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) indicate that this eruptive phase began on December 17, 2025, after about five months of quiet, said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/loop.frontiersin.org\/people\/1312548\/publications\">Simon Plank<\/a>. Plank, a researcher at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-95197-2\">studying<\/a> Home Reef\u2019s eruption dynamics and cycles of growth and erosion since it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/home-reef-erupts-150368\/\">awoke in 2022<\/a> and emerged above sea level.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in December 2025, lava flows first extended the island\u2019s footprint to the east and south, then to the northwest, and later to the north. Based on synthetic aperture radar data from DLR\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dlr.de\/en\/research-and-transfer\/projects-and-missions\/terrasar-x\">TerraSAR-X<\/a> satellite, the island had grown by nearly 8 hectares (20 acres)\u2014about the size of 15 American football fields\u2014by early February, Plank said.<\/p>\n<p>Plumes of volcanic gases billowed from a 100-meter-diameter vent throughout the eruptive period. Pilots in the area observed plumes increasing in height during the last week of January, Tonga Geological Services <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tongageologicalservice\">reported<\/a>, and the agency raised the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/programs\/VHP\/alert-level-icons\">aviation color code<\/a> to orange due to the possible presence of suspended ash.<\/p>\n<p>The discolored water around the island is a sign of gases and magmatic fluids venting from the volcano. Previous\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2007JB005441\">research<\/a>\u00a0has shown that such plumes of superheated, acidic water can contain particulate matter, volcanic rock fragments, and sulfur, and that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2024GC011685\">they can appear<\/a> before signs of an eruption above the surface. Concentrations of yellow sulfur mixing with the blue ocean may account for the water\u2019s greenish appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Home Reef is part of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-95197-2\/figures\/1\">Tonga Volcanic Arc<\/a>, a line of submarine and island volcanoes along the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kermadec-Tonga_subduction_zone\">Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone<\/a>. One of its neighbors, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/tonga-volcano-plume-reached-the-mesosphere-149474\/\">Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha\u2019apai<\/a>, produced one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recent history\u2014large enough to send a volcanic plume into the mesosphere.
