Numerous high-temperature records fell that day amid a bout of extreme heat.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The extent and severity of the heat are represented on this map, which shows air temperatures on the afternoon of March 20, modeled at 2 meters (6.5 feet) above the ground. It was produced with a version of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov\/gmao-products\/\">GEOS<\/a>\u00a0(Goddard Earth Observing System) model, which integrates meteorological observations with mathematical equations that represent physical processes in the atmosphere. The darkest reds are where the model indicates temperatures reaching or exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Measurements from weather stations on March 20 pinpointed some of the highest U.S. temperatures in Arizona and California. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Yuma, Arizona, reached a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/Climate?wfo=psr\">record high of 109\u00b0F<\/a>, which is 28 degrees above the 1991-2020 climatological normal for that date. Four other locations\u2014near Yuma and Martinez Lake in Arizona and Ogilby and Winterhaven in California\u2014tied for the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/archives\/web_pages\/discussions\/archive_nathilo.php?adate=03\/20\/2026&amp;sdate=20260320\">highest temperatures in the U.S.<\/a> that day, reaching 112\u00b0F (44\u00b0C).<\/p>\n<p>Several other U.S. states saw temperatures soar in late March. In Texas, Lubbock experienced several days in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSLubbock\/status\/2034531357875978555?s=20\">mid to upper 90s<\/a>. Sweltering temperatures extended into Mexico as well. A new March record was set in Hermosillo, for example, where temperatures reached 108\u00b0F (42\u00b0C), according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsdaily.com\/news\/spring-arrives-with-scorching-heat-waves-e12-states-passing-105f\/\">news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The heat was driven by a persistent high-pressure system, which the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSPhoenix\/status\/2035041936378138804?s=20\">NWS noted<\/a> was similar in strength to conditions seen in summer. It remained over the region for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/record-heat-climate-warming-arizona-california-11dcebf8ba88cfcd3fd9bc1144a5df10#:~:text=with%2011%20or%2012%20straight%20days%20of%20temperatures%20higher%20than%20the%20city%E2%80%99s%20previous%20March%20record\">more than a week<\/a>, keeping the air dry and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/4ttd1U7\">skies clear<\/a> across a vast stretch of the U.S. and Mexico.
