Overview <\/h3>\n

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of disease conditions that disproportionately a\u00a3ect
\npopulations living in poverty, particularly in remote and underserved areas. While their causes vary, including
\nvirus, bacteria, parasites, fungi and toxins, they share a common feature: all can result in serious health,
\nsocial, and economic consequences. Many NTDs are preventable or treatable, yet they often receive less
\nattention and fewer resources compared to other health conditions.\n<\/p>\n

A number of NTDs present with visible manifestations on the skin, including diseases such as leprosy, yaws,
\nlymphatic filariasis and scabies. Sharing this characteristic, these diseases are collectively referred to as
\n\u201cskin NTDs\u201d.\n<\/p>\n

To support countries in addressing these diseases more effectively, WHO launched the Strategic Framework
\nfor Integrated Control and Management of Skin NTDs in 2022. This approach aims to strengthen integrated
\nstrategies by promoting joint interventions, optimizing the use of available resources, and expanding
\naccess to care.<\/p>\n

Through the integration of skin NTDs services, it is anticipated that improved care will benefit not only
\nindividuals affected by skin NTDs, but also those with other skin-related conditions, contributing to the
\nbroader vision of \u201cskin health for all\u201d.\n<\/p>\n

This booklet supports the implementation of the skin NTD framework and has been developed primarily for
\nfront-line health-care workers like you, working in remote and underserved communities where skin NTDs
\nand other skin conditions commonly co-exist. It provides clear, practical guidance to help you recognize
\nand manage both skin NTDs and other frequently encountered skin diseases. The content follows a skin
\nsign and symptom-based approach – starting from observable signs in the patient (such as a lump, ulcer, or
\nitching)\u2014to guide identification of potential conditions and inform appropriate management and referral.
\nThis method allows you to apply your knowledge even in situations where the exact diagnosis may not be
\nclear. With experience, you will become increasingly confident in recognizing the signs and symptoms of
\nskin diseases<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n
