Overview <\/h3>\n

This operational guidance addresses the integration of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) processes in conflict and post-conflict settings. It highlights how prolonged exposure to armed conflict, community stigma, family separation, loss of livelihoods and other adversities can affect the mental health and psychosocial well-being of people formerly recruited or associated with armed forces and armed groups, including children, women and their families. Recognizing that these challenges can create barriers to successful reintegration and social inclusion, the document emphasizes the need to view DDR not only as a political and economic process but also as a mental health and psychosocial one.\n<\/p>\n

Drawing on international standards, existing guidance, expert consultations and practitioner experience, the publication identifies strategic and programmatic entry points for strengthening MHPSS within DDR. It promotes a holistic, family- and community-based approach that includes assessment of needs and resources, organization of integrated services and supports, meaningful participation of formerly recruited individuals, child-sensitive programming, community-based interventions, capacity-building for DDR practitioners, and coordination across sectors. The guidance also underscores the links between MHPSS, social cohesion and peacebuilding, and provides a framework for operationalizing MHPSS throughout DDR processes to support sustainable reintegration and recovery.<\/p>\n
