{"id":9888,"date":"2026-09-04T04:01:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T04:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/godshand.link\/ground_post\/a-trio-of-tropical-cyclones-in-the-pacific\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T04:01:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T04:01:00","slug":"a-trio-of-tropical-cyclones-in-the-pacific","status":"publish","type":"ground_post","link":"https:\/\/godshand.link\/en_gb\/ground_post\/a-trio-of-tropical-cyclones-in-the-pacific\/","title":{"rendered":"A Trio of Tropical Cyclones in the Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When hurricane forecasters released their seasonal outlooks in spring 2026, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/el-nino-is-underway\/\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> brewing in the Pacific contributed to predictions of below-normal activity in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/noaa-maintains-prediction-for-below-normal-atlantic-hurricane-season\">Atlantic basin<\/a> but above-normal activity in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/Epac_hurr\/index.shtml\">northeastern and central Pacific basins<\/a>. In early September, near the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/climo\/#stca\">climatological peak<\/a> of hurricane season, those spring outlooks were on target, with the eastern Pacific buzzing with activity and the Atlantic notably quiet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of September 3, the Northeast Pacific had produced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tropical.atmos.colostate.edu\/Realtime\/\">15 named storms<\/a> and six hurricanes, well above the norm for that point in the season. The Atlantic basin, meanwhile, laboring under <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/philklotzbach\/status\/2095523106861572148\">unfavorable wind shear<\/a> conditions, had produced just five named storms and no hurricanes. El Ni\u00f1o typically enhances hurricane activity in the eastern and central Pacific basins because of the unusually warm water temperatures it brings to those parts of the ocean. It tends to suppress hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/enso\/walker-circulation-ensos-atmospheric-buddy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shifting<\/a> large-scale circulation patterns in a way that makes it harder to sustain storms there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 1:14 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (20:14 Universal Time) on September 1, NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/epic.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\">EPIC<\/a>\u00a0(Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera) on the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/current-satellite-missions\/currently-flying\/dscovr-deep-space-climate-observatory\">DSCOVR<\/a>\u00a0(Deep Space Climate Observatory) satellite captured an image of three <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gpm.nasa.gov\/education\/articles\/what-hurricane-typhoon-or-tropical-cyclone\">tropical cyclones<\/a> churning simultaneously in the Pacific, along with one in the Atlantic. A band of clouds and thunderstorms associated with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/jetstream\/tropical\/convergence-zone\">Intertropical Convergence Zone<\/a> (ITCZ) is visible to the south of the storms. The spacecraft was nearly 1 million miles from Earth and just shy of 93 million miles from the Sun when the image was acquired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trio of storms in the Pacific were Lowell, Karina, and Marie. Of the three, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/#Lowell\">Lowell<\/a> became the strongest, with winds reaching <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/aboutsshws.php\">category 5<\/a> strength for several hours on September 2. Around the same time, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/#Karina\">Karina<\/a>, spinning a few thousand kilometers to the east, achieved category 4 strength, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/amarkowitzWX\/status\/2095250325720666609\">rare case<\/a> of category 4 and 5 hurricanes occurring simultaneously in the area. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/#Marie\">Marie<\/a>, spinning southwest of Baja California, was still a tropical storm when the image was acquired but was strengthening as it moved northwest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Atlantic, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/news\/goes-east-observes-tropical-storm-edouard-making-landfall-louisiana\">Tropical Storm Edouard<\/a> was visible to EPIC over Louisiana and Texas, shortly after the short-lived storm made landfall. It brought torrential rains and strong winds that downed trees and power lines. Some areas received <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NWSLakeCharles\/posts\/pfbid0zSdV12qFit1wHPpSBkhMwur3vHCrHMi5gZcGqbHXexqHi6EGyyg9XHsf6a3Eas9yl\">15 to 24 inches<\/a> (38 to 61 centimeters) of rain, according to National Weather Service meteorologists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of September 3, the Atlantic basin&#8217;s total <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/hurricane\/experts-say-this-metric-is-a-more-reliable-way-to-quantify-the-true-strength-of-hurricane-season\/1525616\">accumulated cyclone energy<\/a>\u00a0(ACE) index was 4.4, about 9 percent of normal for that date, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tropical.atmos.colostate.edu\/Realtime\/\">statistics<\/a> compiled by Colorado State University meteorologists. Meanwhile, the Northeast Pacific basin&#8217;s ACE was 130, about 50 percent above normal. The ACE index incorporates both the intensity and longevity of storms, making it easier to compare individual storms and seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth-science\/missions\/earth-missions-current\/\">NASA Earth-observing platforms<\/a> provide data that can aid in emergency preparedness before landfall and damage assessment and response afterward.
