But as winter began to release its icy grip, an uncommonly clear satellite image revealed that part of this remote realm was still very much awake, at least volcanically speaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount Michael, the stratovolcano at the center of Saunders Island, rises above the ice-filled South Atlantic Ocean in this image, acquired with the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat\/oli\/\">OLI<\/a>\u00a0(Operational Land Imager)\u00a0on the NASA-USGS\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-8\/\">Landsat 8<\/a> satellite on August 24, 2026. The natural-color image is overlaid with an infrared signal (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat\/oli\/#spectral-bands\">OLI bands<\/a> 7-6-5), shown in red, revealing heat from the persistent lava lake in its summit crater. A puff of a volcanic plume hovering over the peak, along with darkened snow on its northern slopes, also suggests ongoing activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saunders Island is one of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oceancensus.org\/fire-and-ice-why-explore-the-antarctic-waters-around-the-south-sandwich-islands\/\">South Sandwich Islands<\/a>, a string of small volcanic peaks about 350 kilometers (220 miles) long that formed from the South American plate <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/news\/science-snippet\/earthword-subduction\">subducting<\/a> beneath the tiny South Sandwich plate. Regular eruptions, including at Mount Michael, have occurred on these islands in recent centuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the volcanoes\u2019 remoteness, scientists rely on satellite data to understand their activity. An <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jvolgeores.2019.05.002\">analysis<\/a> of thermal anomalies in Landsat, Sentinel, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/terra.nasa.gov\/about\/terra-instruments\/aster\">ASTER<\/a> (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) observations spanning 30 years led researchers to conclude that Mount Michael hosts a persistent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/lava-lake-discovered-on-mount-michael-145328\/\">lava lake<\/a> in its summit crater. Only a handful of other volcanoes on Earth, including <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/a-hot-and-fiery-decade-for-kilauea\/\">K\u012blauea<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/nyamulagira-brings-the-heat-154037\/\">Nyamulagira<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/the-smoking-mountain-152150\/\">Erta Ale<\/a>, are known to have similar, frequently active features.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thermal observations from the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/about\/\">MODIS<\/a>\u00a0(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/our-satellites\/currently-flying\/joint-polar-satellite-system\/visible-infrared-imaging-radiometer-suite-viirs\">VIIRS<\/a>\u00a0(Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instruments have also enabled long-term monitoring of Mount Michael. Data provided through <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirovaweb.it\/NRT\/volcanoDetails_MIR.php?volcano_id=390090\">MIROVA<\/a>, a near-real-time volcanic hot spot detection system, indicate that low-intensity activity has been ongoing at the volcano for the past several years. Other observations from NASA&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/aura\/\">Aura<\/a> satellite show that emissions of sulfur dioxide and other gases\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/srep44095\">are common<\/a>\u00a0at Mount Michael.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cloud-free window over Mount Michael would close in short order. One week later, when <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\">Landsat 9<\/a> passed over the island, a more active atmosphere had returned. But the weather patterns interacted with the island to put on a spectacle of their own. The 843-meter-high (2,766-foot-high) peak jutting from the ocean disturbed passing winds to produce a series of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/sandwiched-wave-clouds-146366\/\">wave clouds<\/a> resembling the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/epod.usra.edu\/blog\/2009\/08\/boat-wakes-from-above.html\">wake of a ship<\/a>, a familiar phenomenon in this region. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/4ykpQlO\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">False-color imagery<\/a> captured by NASA\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aqua.nasa.gov\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aqua<\/a> satellite indicates that a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/volcanic-emissions-can-change-clouds-146856\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">volcanic track<\/a> caused by degassing sulfur dioxide was likely present as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>NASA Earth Observatory images by Michala Garrison, using Landsat data from the\u00a0<\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/earthexplorer.usgs.gov\/\"><em>U.S. Geological Survey<\/em><\/a><em>.
